EMDR

EMDR Therapy – Healing from Trauma and Life’s Challenges
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective psychotherapy that helps people heal from the emotional distress caused by trauma and other overwhelming life experiences. EMDR can be used to treat conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, panic disorders, and other stress-related difficulties.

Research has shown that EMDR can produce lasting results, sometimes achieving in a few months what previously took years. It is recognised as an evidence-based treatment by leading organisations, including the American Psychiatric Association, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, the World Health Organization, and the U.S. Departments of Veterans Affairs and Defence.

How EMDR Works
When traumatic or distressing events occur, the brain may struggle to process the memory naturally. As a result, upsetting thoughts, images, and emotions can continue to impact daily life. EMDR helps remove this “block,” allowing the brain to process the memory in a healthy way. Importantly, while the memory remains, the intense emotional distress (fight, flight, freeze responses) is resolved.

Unlike traditional talk therapies, EMDR does not require you to relive your trauma in detail or complete homework between sessions. Instead, you briefly focus on the distressing material while simultaneously attending to an external stimulus, such as guided eye movements, hand-tapping, or auditory stimulation. This structured approach helps your brain reprocess memories safely and effectively.

The EMDR Process
EMDR therapy follows an eight-phase protocol using a three-pronged approach:
  1. Past: Process the traumatic events that underpin current difficulties, creating new adaptive associations.
  2. Present: Target current triggers and desensitise responses to internal or external stressors.
  3. Future: Develop “imaginal templates” for future situations to build skills for adaptive functioning.
This structured method ensures that therapy is safe, thorough, and focused on real-life improvements.
